Import - 3DS Max to GameStart
This video tutorial will detail in a few steps how to export your 3D assets from Autodesk 3D Studio Max to GameStart using the FBX format.
Exporting from 3DS Max
First you will need a recent FBX exporter. The FBX 2011.2 exporter plugin works perfectly, and can be downloaded from the Autodesk website. Start 3DSMax, and open the scene that contains your assets.
- Check the units system that 3D Studio is working with. Working in meters is preferable in many ways, for the worfklow consistency and arithmetic precision.
- Ensure that all the transformation matrix have been reset. Reset all the pivots, then use the "Reset Xform" utility, followed by a "Collapse all".
Export the data, using the "Export" entry from the file menu. Select the FBX 2010 format, optionally set the conversion axis to Y-up, then export.
Importing into GameStart
Start the GameStart editor, open your existing project, or create a new one.
Using "Open file" from the file menu, select your FBX file. The editor will select a default import path, feel free to change it, and proceed to the import.
Once the import process is done, you should see your assets in the main 3D view.
