Well it's an old italian tradition or better a catholic one cus today is Mary Immaculate or Blessed Virgin. Even for people that aren't catholic we do the crhistmas tree today. I thought it was for french too cus we are close.
We are close indeed, but the law about the separation of the Churches and the State from the early 20th century changed a lot of things in French people minds, not to mention the even earlier French Revolution.
Thus I think that the Christian traditions are less strong in France than in Italy or Spain.
Anyway, Happy Christmas Tree !!!! \o/
(and there are still loads of trees sold for Christmas in France :)
